仏の手を彫る 冨田工藝の彫刻家は、無垢の木の中から仏の魂をそっと解き放つ。静かな恥じらいの中に、まるで生命を得ようとする息づかいが感じられる。
Through the Buddha’s hand he carves, sculptor TOMITA KOUGEI allows the soul of the Buddha to emerge from raw wood — unfolding gently, as if, in its silent humility, it longed to come to life.
冨田工藝は京都において、百年にわたり木と向き合い、木彫の道を歩み続けてきた。手がけるのは、仏教にまつわる仏像と仏具。仏像は祈りの象徴であり、仏具はその信仰を支える道具。いずれも日本の木彫文化を象徴する存在である。冨田工藝の作品の多くは寺院に納められ、百年の先までも人々の祈りの中心であり続けるだろう。その源流をたどれば千年前、刀文化の発展とともに木彫の技も磨かれてきた。冨田工藝は、その技と心を損なうことなく、日々研鑽を重ねながら、現代に息づく伝統のかたちを探り続けている。そして今、仏像や仏具の意匠をもとにアクセサリー制作にも取り組む。それは装飾ではなく、仏の造形に宿る精神を身にまとう――護りのかたちとしての提案である。手のひらに宿る祈りの美を、日常の中に。
For over a century in Kyoto, TOMITA KOUGEI has shaped wood with patience and precision, engaging in a silent dialogue with the material. The workshop focuses primarily on Buddhist statues and ritual instruments, spaces where prayer takes tangible form. The statues embody the prayer; the instruments support its gesture. Both reflect the profound soul of Japanese woodcarving. Most of these works find their home in temples, where for a hundred years and more, they remain at the heart of devotion. Japanese woodcarving traces its roots back over a millennium, flourishing alongside the culture of the sword. Faithful to inherited spirit and technique, TOMITA KOUGEI pursues each day the quest for a living tradition, open to the present. Today, TOMITA KOUGEI also explores the creation of jewelry inspired by the forms and symbols of Buddhist statues and ritual instruments. These are not mere ornaments, but ways to carry the spirit of the Buddha — a protective, intimate presence. The beauty of prayer cradled in the hand, a breath of serenity invited into daily life.
